The popular character Sabelo from the canceled e.tv serial opera Rhythm City is well-known for being played by talented actor Ishmael Songo.The actor has been in the spotlight due to his role in the cancelled telenovela Lingashoni.

In the well-liked telenovela, Songo played Japan, a drug-addicted homeless man.

Japan, the character in the show, stole money from his family and vanished for many days in order to get stoned with his pals on the streets.

He costarred with Rhythm City actress Magi Williams, who performed as his mother Brenda, and Lungelo Mpangase, who played his sister Poppy.

The viral homeless photo left social media in shock after sensational trends in the media said that the actor is now struggling and sleeping in the streets. The truth revealed that the actor is not struggling; the photo was taken from the show he was cast in.

Sowetan reports that his Rhythm City character, Sabelo, was also a drug addict in the e.tv soapie.The publication adds that Songo’s portrayal of a nyaope addict left viewers addicted to his acting.

The actor explained in his 2015 interview why he proposed the daring storyline to the show.

“I saw how bad the problem of the drug had become; it’s become like HIV. I come from a poverty-stricken environment, and I saw how bad things are for these guys.”

He also revealed he hanged out with nyaope addicts in his home township of Tembisa for research..

“I had to sit down with them to see and learn how they roll their joints because we had to make it convincing.”
