Renowned gospel singer Winnie Mashaba recently found herself at the center of a social media storm following her visit to the late Solly Moholo’s family. The Limpopo-born singer faced backlash after she posted pictures and videos of her arrival at Moholo’s home in a helicopter, which many felt was inappropriate and insensitive, given the financial struggles Moholo’s family had experienced leading up to his death.
Prior to his passing, Moholo’s family had publicly appealed for financial donations to cover his medical bills, requesting an amount of R700,000. This context made Mashaba’s dramatic arrival at his home in a helicopter all the more controversial.
On 4 October 2024, Mashaba took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), to share her visit to Moholo’s family, posting images and videos of herself arriving in a private helicopter. In her post, she described the emotional moment she was greeted by Moholo’s mother, writing, “When Mama saw me, she said ngwanaka (my child), I’m happy you are here. The spark in her eyes.”

Mashaba continued in her post, expressing her grief over the loss of her mentor: “As I shamelessly continue to mourn my mentor and father in the music industry. Continue to rest in eternal peace.”
Despite her heartfelt tribute, many South Africans were quick to criticize the singer, accusing her of flaunting her wealth and failing to support Moholo’s family when they needed financial assistance for his medical care.
Social media users were particularly vocal about Mashaba’s perceived insensitivity. Many questioned why she hadn’t contributed to the family’s call for donations before making such a grand entrance at the funeral.
One user on X, @Kat_Zar_, voiced their frustration, writing: “O na le sebete (you have the nerve), Winny. His family was asking for donations, and y’all were nowhere to be found, now you are flying to his funeral. La loya (witchcraft) shem.” Another user, @bad_option88, added: “I hope u contributed when they asked for donations.”
Others pointed out that while the singer may have had good intentions, her actions came off as showy and unnecessary. @EdwardthembaSa commented: “But mama Winnie, showing at the expense of your mentor’s death is not on. Especially for a church proud lady as you. To be honest, you didn’t have to shem.”
Mashaba, who has often credited Solly Moholo for her success, shared more about their relationship, stating that Moholo had played a significant role in shaping her career. In another social media post, she reflected on their history: “I was very young and clueless about the music industry. My mom handed me over to Malome Solly Moholo, he trained me and guided me throughout. It’s so painful to say Rest In Peace, Malome Solly.”
Moholo had publicly acknowledged his role in Mashaba’s career during an appearance on *The Venting Podcast* earlier this year, where he expressed pride in having discovered the award-winning gospel singer.
While Winnie Mashaba’s helicopter visit was likely intended as a grand gesture of respect for her late mentor, it has stirred a significant amount of controversy online. Many felt that the display was tone-deaf, particularly given Moholo’s family’s recent financial struggles. The incident highlights the fine line between honoring someone’s legacy and being sensitive to the context surrounding their passing.
