Tragedy and Chaos: Deadly Crashes Rock N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass Amid Treacherous Weather
The N3 highway at Van Reenen’s Pass has become a scene of tragedy and disruption, as a series of crashes within hours have left motorists shaken and authorities scrambling to restore order.
The deadly incidents, compounded by hazardous weather conditions, have claimed multiple lives and caused significant delays, prompting urgent warnings for drivers to exercise extreme caution.
Late Monday night, a catastrophic multi-vehicle pile-up near the Tugela Plaza resulted in the loss of 18 lives, including 13 adults and five children.
The crash involved a taxi, a truck, and a light motor vehicle, devastating families and leaving emergency teams working through the night to clear the scene.
The roadway, along with the Tugela Plaza and Tugela East Ramp Plaza, was temporarily closed to northbound traffic to facilitate cleanup operations.
Just hours later, on Tuesday morning, another crash was reported near Montrose, adding to the chaos. Details about injuries from this second incident remain unclear, but it has intensified concerns over the treacherous conditions on this vital stretch of the N3.
Thania Dhoogra, operations manager for the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), confirmed that the section of the highway affected by the fatal Monday night crash has since been reopened. However, she cautioned that cleanup operations would resume later in the day, potentially causing further disruptions.

“Recovery is complete at the earlier fatal crash site on Van Reenen’s Pass. All lanes have been reopened to traffic, but please note that cleanup operations are ongoing and may lead to temporary delays,” Dhoogra said.
The N3TC has issued a strong appeal to road users to prioritize safety, particularly as wet weather continues to impact visibility and road conditions along the N3 Toll Route.
“Wet weather conditions are currently being experienced along most parts of the N3 Toll Route. N3TC appeals to road users to heed warnings, reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and drive defensively, especially in this weather,” Dhoogra emphasized.
The tragic Monday night crash has drawn widespread attention and sorrow, with KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in this horrific accident. We urge all road users to take extra precautions to prevent further tragedies,” Duma said.
The N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass is notorious for its challenging driving conditions, especially during adverse weather. The steep gradients, sharp curves, and high traffic volumes make it one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in South Africa.
Monday night’s crash and the subsequent incident on Tuesday morning have only underscored the risks associated with this critical transport route.
Eyewitness accounts from the Monday night crash describe scenes of chaos, with emergency responders working tirelessly to extricate victims and clear the wreckage.
The scale of the disaster has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved safety measures on the N3.
Road safety experts have also pointed to the role of weather in exacerbating the dangers. Heavy rains and reduced visibility can significantly increase the likelihood of accidents, particularly for heavy vehicles and taxis, which are common on this route.
Drivers are urged to remain vigilant and adapt their driving to the conditions. Reducing speed, keeping headlights on, and maintaining a safe following distance are critical steps to minimize the risk of accidents.
Authorities have also advised against overtaking on wet roads and emphasized the importance of ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys.
As cleanup operations continue and investigations into both crashes are underway, the focus remains on preventing further loss of life.
The N3 Toll Concession has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety of the highway but stressed that road users must also play their part in adhering to safety guidelines.
The N3 is a vital artery connecting Durban and Johannesburg, and disruptions on this route have significant economic and logistical implications.
However, the recent spate of accidents highlights the human cost of failing to prioritize safety on the roads.
For the families mourning their loved ones and the many others affected by these tragic events, the aftermath serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of caution behind the wheel.
As South Africa grapples with the devastating impact of these crashes, the hope is that greater awareness and stricter safety measures will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Motorists traveling on the N3 are urged to remain alert, heed weather warnings, and respect the rules of the road to ensure their safety and that of others.
The N3TC’s message is clear: defensive driving is not just a recommendation—it is a necessity, especially on one of the country’s most treacherous highways.
