Gogo Maweni

During her appearance in the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday, 20 January, Dr Maweni was left with egg on her face when she tried to lie to the court that she has no criminal record.

But the prosecutor dropped a bombshell that the state has records revealing that Maweni, who is accused of assault, was a convict, but will need time to obtain the record from the investigating officer.

The defence admitted she is aware of the previous matter and claimed that it was withdrawn and no further instructions were given.

Maweni, whose real name is Makgotso Mofokeng (38), appeared in a packed court. She appeared in fresh cornrows, a grey top, grey track pants and light green sleepers. She had long eye lashes with manicured nails.

She’s accused of assaulting an ex-boyfriend’s relative in December 2019, but was only arrested on Sunday, 19 January and detained at Mondeor cop shop in Joburg.

The court heard that the sangoma is a mum of four and is pregnant with twins. The state asked for seven days for profiling and formal bail application.

After learning of her previous conviction, the state opposed a bail application which was set to take place, stating that an application can only be made after they have obtained a docket for the previous case alongside the bail sheets.

Her case was postponed to Monday, 27 January for formal bail application and the accused will remain in police custody. The state is given an opportunity to obtain a bail statement as well as a profile within the seven-day period.

Maweni is allegedly also being investigated for five counts of murder committed in Eldoradado Park, Moroka, Orange Farm, Mondeor and Bekkersdal.

Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo told Daily Sun it cannot be confirmed if the suspect is linked to other cases, pending further investigations.
