Kelly Khumalo not arrested for Senzo Meyiwa’s murdєr

Kelly Khumalo has not been arrested for Senzo Meyiwa’s murdєr, and police say it’s because they don’t have enough evidence yet.

Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigator, told the Pretoria High Court that higher-ups ordered him to keep digging until he found stronger links between Khumalo and the five men now on trial.

Gininda was being cross-examined on Thursday by Advocate Charles Mnisi, who represents two of the accused.

Mnisi didn’t beat around the bush. He asked straight: “Why was Kelly Khumalo’s warrant of arrest not authorised?”

Gininda said the message from above was clear: build a tighter case before acting. He said Khumalo, who was Meyiwa’s girlfriend when he was gunned down, had four cellphone numbers she didn’t give to police.

He also said there were claims she contacted accused number three.

Mnisi pressed him again, asking if the case was all based on a call between Khumalo and accused number five, Fisokuhle Ntuli. But Gininda dodged the question, saying the arrest warrant was not approved because the investigation was ongoing and the team had a “case strategy”.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng reminded the court that only the national director of public prosecutions can decide who gets charged or arrested.

“If the NDPP doesn’t approve the warrant, the police can’t do anything about it,” the judge said.

Mnisi insisted police didn’t have solid proof. He slammed the idea that this was a “contractual killing” — a reference to claims the murdєr was a hit.

State prosecutor George Baloyi fired back, saying motive didn’t matter: “Murder is murdєr.”

Gininda said the NDPP had a plan and didn’t share all of it with him. But he was told Khumalo’s role would be handled “strategically”.

The murdєr trial continues.
