Chris Brown concert causes massive traffic in Joburg

Traffic in downtown Johannesburg has come to a standstill as fans flock to the FNB Stadium for the second day of Chris Brown’s concert.

On Saturday, the RNB star made history as the first RNB artist to fill Africa’s largest stadium, with over 90,000 fans attending. The 94,000-seater stadium is expected to fill up again for Sunday’s show.

After an electrifying performance, Brown shared his emotions with the crowd. “I’ve been waiting my whole life for this kind of moment,” he said before performing his hit song Forever.

The singer also took to Instagram to thank fans for their love. “South Africa, I love you. See you tomorrow (15 December). First show was history, so let’s make it again!”

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Xolani Fihla said traffic officers have been deployed in large numbers to handle the increased traffic around the stadium and the Nasrec Expo Centre.

“To manage the increased traffic flow, full road closures will be implemented from 11 AM on both concert days. Affected routes include Soweto Highway, Golden Highway, Nasrec Road, Booysens, and Reserve Road. Access will only be allowed for specific vehicles. Pre-paid parking is available at Recreation Road,” Fihla said.

The EFF elective conference at Nasrec has also added to the traffic congestion.

The Gauteng Events, Safety and Security Planning Committee (ESSPC) assured fans on Saturday that all measures are in place for a safe and enjoyable experience at the concerts.

To make travel easier, the Gautrain Management Agency has arranged a late-night train service, with shuttle buses running between Park Station and FNB Stadium.
