Meyiwa 10-year anniversary: Still no justice!
SATURDAY, 26 October marked 10 years since the gunning down of Mzansi’s most loved goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa was killed under mysterious circumstances while visiting his then-girlfriend and popular singer Kelly Khumalo at her home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni on the evening of 26 October 2014.
He was gunned down in the presence of Kelly, her sister Zandile Gumede, their mum Gladness Khumalo, Zandile’s then-boyfriend Longwe Twala, and Meyiwa’s close friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Twala, along with two minors.
Witnesses in the house have since claimed that Meyiwa was shot dead by two intruders.
In 2020, five men were arrested in connection with the crime, and they’ve been on trial ever since, with the state struggling to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are the alleged intruders.

Car that keeps him ‘alive’
TEN years on, still no justice for Senzo Meyiwa. It’s been a decade since Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo “Nzori'” Meyiwa was gunned down, and his family is yet to find closure.
Senzo was shot in 2014, and his family has been relying on court proceedings to finally get justice for him.
Senzo’s dad, Sam Meyiwa, was determined to see justice for his son but sadly died in 2019 without seeing any resolution. Sam went to great lengths, even ambushing then-police minister Fikile Mbalula in 2017, pleading for progress in the case when Mbalula visited Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban.

‘Killers’ days are numbered’
THE Meyiwa ancestors are fighting in their graves. This is according to sangoma Mkhulu Solly Mathebula.
The Mamelodi-based sangoma shared his spiritual views on the killing of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Five men were arrested for his murder and are now on trial, which has been ongoing since 2022.
Speaking to Daily Sun, sangoma Mathebula said the case is a mess because the real killer is outside.

Years of Senzo’s Grave Drama
IT’S been 10 years since Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa died, and his grave has faced different challenges.
It took six years for a tombstone to be erected on his grave at the Heroes’ Acre cemetery in Chesterville, west of Durban.
The vandalised Senzo Meyiwa’s tombstone.
Although his grave was located in a special gravesite, Heroes’ Acre, where only renowned citizens and public figures are buried, his grave was merely a heap of sand with glass and small trees next to the veteran journalist Nat Nakasa’s grave.
In November 2020, a befitting tombstone with Meyiwa’s picture was finally unveiled in his honour.

AfriForum pleased with the trial
LOBBY group AfriForum is satisfied with progress in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
The organisation has been watching Meyiwa’s case since the trial began. They have also been vocal about the accused’s involvement in the late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s killing.
Speaking to Daily Sun, head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, Advocate Gerrie Nel said they remain critical of the National Prosecuting Authority.
They are steadfast in the view that prosecution should have included a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of the mastermind.

‘Ancestors tampered with evidence’
An inyanga believes Senzo Meyiwa will not receive justice.
This is according to a Durban-based popular inyanga, Bhaka “King Bhaka” Nzama, who said the court case would not receive proper judgment.
Tampered evidence
Bhaka said the case evidence was intentionally tampered with by the ancestors of both Senzo and Kelly Khumalo after they fought over their disapproved relationship.
He identified Senzo’s decision to go against his parents’ wishes to date Kelly, despite their disapproval, as the key factor that led to his death and the compromised evidence preventing him from getting justice.

Accused’s families want justice!
THE families of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial want the “real killers” to confess.
As Saturday, 26 October marked 10 years since Meyiwa’s passing, the families of the five men arrested for his murder said they are suffering.
Speaking to Daily Sun, one of the family representatives, Sinqobile Maphisa, the sister of accused number four, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, said the case has taken a toll on them. She said the men have kids who are being bullied at school because of the trial.
“Every day the kids are being told that their fathers are killers all because they see them on TV being abused by the justice system.”
She said they know that their brothers are being implicated in a crime they know nothing about.
Sinqobile also mentioned that they’re also tormented by people who believe the alleged lies being peddled in court by the state prosecutors.

Tragic end to his dream home!
THE late Orlando Pirates star died while building a new home.
The house is located at Adams Mission, south of Durban, a few kilometres from his original home in Umlazi township.
When he died, Senzo already had a fiancee, Mandisa Mkhize.

Unfinished mansion raises questions
It was unclear whether the house was for him and Mandisa or a family house, but he left it unfinished. After his death, the house remained unfenced and unfinished.
Residents complained to Daily Sun that the house had become a place for illicit activities and a hideout for thugs.
In 2018, Daily Sun visited the unfinished house and was met with overgrown bushes, used condoms and cigarette butts lying all over the place.
