Women’s Month has ended on a sad note with the passing of renowned poet Jessica Mbangeni and media personality Thabiso Sikwane.
The 47-year-old praise poet Mbangeni, who was known for her spiritual leadership, died at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Saturday morning after a short illness.
Sikwane’s family confirmed Thabiso’s death on Saturday, saying:
It was with profound sadness to announce the passing of Thabiso, whose dedication and passion for Christ, family life and the media and entertainment industry left an indelible mark on colleagues and audiences alike. During her illustrious career in television, she produced, hosted and covered significant events, shaped narratives and inspired many.
The family said they were deeply saddened by the loss and prayed her legacy would continue to inspire generations to come.
Sikwane was married to Thato Sikwane, known as DJ Fresh. They got divorced in 2022.
Memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in the coming days, the family said.
Beacon of light
Mbangeni’s family said she was a beacon of light, a voice of wisdom and a source of inspiration to many.
Her family said in a statement:
Her contributions to our community and the world as praise poet, spiritual leader and cultural ambassador were immeasurable and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched. We are deeply appreciative of the love and support from friends, fans and the community but we request that you to give us the space to grieve as a family.
While further details regarding her memorial service and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course, the family asked for privacy “during this difficult time as we mourn her passing”.
Brand South Africa extended heartfelt condolences to the Mbangeni family, adding that she would be remembered for years to come.
The passing of the duo comes just weeks after the passing of another celebrated actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume, who died on 6 August 2024.
