Former Manchester United Coach Benni McCarthy Named Kenya Head Coach, Takes Over Harambee Stars
Benni McCarthy has been appointed as the new head coach of the Kenya National Team, Harambee Stars.
His appointment comes after a period of uncertainty following his departure from Manchester United in June, where he served as an assistant coach under Erik Ten Hag.
First Task: World Cup Qualifiers
McCarthy is set to officially begin his duties this month, with his first major challenge being Kenya’s upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon.
His leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective as the Harambee Stars aim to make a mark on the continental stage.
Bennie McCarthy’s Vision for Kenya
Speaking at his unveiling, the former Bafana Bafana striker expressed his enthusiasm for the new role.
“It’s been an absolute privilege and pleasure to be here in Kenya. I am delighted, and I can’t really wait to start our new journey… making Kenya again one of the powerhouses in Africa,” McCarthy said.
Replacing Engin Firat
McCarthy takes over from Engin Firat, who resigned in December after three years at the helm. Firat’s tenure ended on a disappointing note after Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) were dashed by Zimbabwe.
Kenyan football fans will be eager to see whether McCarthy can restore the team’s competitive edge and guide them to success on the international stage.
