In a remarkable turn of events, Professor Adam Habib, the former Vice Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand and now the Vice-Chancellor of SOAS University of London, has taken to social media to express his admiration for the significant transformation of Durban.

After a challenging few years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and devastating floods, Durban appears to be on a path to revitalization that has caught the attention of many, including Habib.

During his recent summer break in South Africa, Habib visited Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, and he was particularly struck by the improvements he witnessed in Durban.

He shared his experiences on X (formerly known as Twitter), where he noted the city’s impressive turnaround. “Spent summer break in SA – Durban, Cape Town and JHB.

I am utterly astonished at the turnaround in Durban,” he tweeted, highlighting various aspects of the city’s revival.

Habib pointed out specific improvements, such as the well-maintained hedges along the roads, increased security on the beaches, and the overall cleanliness of the city center.

His observations reflect the efforts made by the eThekwini Municipality to restore Durban’s reputation as a vibrant and welcoming destination.

“What a turnaround. Shows you cities can be turned!” he remarked, encapsulating the optimism surrounding Durban’s resurgence.

This positive sentiment is particularly significant given the challenges Durban has faced in recent years. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic severely affected the tourism sector, leading to numerous business closures and economic decline.

Additionally, the civil unrest that erupted in July 2021 and the catastrophic floods in April 2022 further exacerbated the situation, damaging the city’s infrastructure and leading to a loss of its coveted Blue Flag status due to contamination concerns at its beaches.

However, Habib’s comments indicate that a turnaround is indeed in progress. He not only commended Durban but also acknowledged the efforts of Cape Town under the leadership of Helen Zille, while offering a critical assessment of Johannesburg’s current state.

“Johannesburg is broken. This is a city in terminal decline manifested in its dark streets at night, the filthy public spaces, failures in water delivery, and other municipal services, along with security challenges,” he stated, attributing these issues to the city’s political leadership.

Habib stressed that for cities like Durban and Cape Town to successfully revitalize, a combination of political will and effective administration is essential.

He urged for accountability among politicians and officials, stating, “Fire the incompetent and corrupt. If JHB is to turn, its politicians need to go.

Either they need to be voted out, or the national government needs to put the city under administration.” His call for change resonated strongly with South Africans online, as many echoed his sentiments about Durban’s improvements.

Social media users responded enthusiastically to Habib’s praise, sharing their own experiences.

One user, @KKajani123, expressed agreement with Habib’s observations, noting that during their family’s six-day stay in Durban, they were impressed by the cleanliness and functionality of the city, particularly the traffic lights and visible policing.

Another user, @Thanda_Zee, shared their own transformation story from a visit to Durban, emphasizing how leadership and corruption can significantly impact a city’s condition.

As discussions about the state of South African cities continue, Habib’s comments shine a light on the potential for change and the importance of effective governance in urban management.

His reflections not only celebrate Durban’s revival but also serve as a reminder of the challenges that remain in other South African cities, particularly Johannesburg.

The hope is that with the right leadership and commitment to improvement, cities can indeed overcome adversity and thrive once more.

In conclusion, Adam Habib’s enthusiastic praise for Durban’s transformation is a testament to the resilience of the city and its people.

As more South Africans share their positive experiences and the government continues to invest in urban renewal, there is a growing sense of optimism for the future.

Durban’s comeback story serves as an inspiration for other cities facing similar challenges, proving that with determination and effective governance, revitalization is not only possible but achievable.
