In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, 16-year-old Jason Palmer, a student at Port Alfred High School, saved three lives at East Beach in Port Alfred on Saturday morning.

The incident unfolded just before 11 am when siblings aged 12 and 19 were caught in a powerful rip current during high tide.

Jason Palmer is a dedicated student at Port Alfred High School, a well-respected educational institution known for its academic and extracurricular excellence.

The school fosters a strong sense of leadership and community involvement among its students, values that Jason embodied during his courageous rescue.

A passionate surfer, Jason is no stranger to the ocean and its unpredictable nature. His deep understanding of currents and surf conditions played a crucial role in his ability to navigate the dangerous waters that day.

As Jason was exiting the water after a morning of surfing, he spotted the two siblings struggling against the relentless pull of the current. Without hesitation, he grabbed his surfboard and paddled back into the churning waves, reaching the panicked teenagers.

Using his board as a flotation device, he managed to stabilize both of them and began the arduous process of guiding them back to shore. The struggle against the current was exhausting, but Jason remained determined.

Meanwhile, on the beach, their 42-year-old mother watched in terror as her children fought to stay above water.

Overcome with fear, she ran into the surf in a desperate attempt to help. The powerful waves and rip current quickly overwhelmed her, and she too became a victim of the sea’s force.

Realizing the danger had escalated, Jason made the difficult decision to leave the siblings near the shore for the final stretch and paddled back out to rescue the mother.

Fighting against the current yet again, he reached her just in time, secured her onto his board, and guided her safely back to the sand.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted to the situation when a friend of an NSRI Port Alfred volunteer saw a social media post describing the unfolding emergency.

This quick response ensured that additional help was dispatched, with NSRI rescue swimmers, a rescue vehicle, and the NSRI craft “Rescue 11 Alpha” rushing to the scene. By the time emergency responders arrived, Jason had already brought all three individuals safely to shore.

Paramedics assessed the rescued family members, determining that the mother had suffered non-fatal drowning symptoms and required medical attention.

She was transported to the hospital by Gardmed ambulance, where she was treated and later discharged. The two siblings, though shaken, were unharmed and did not require medical treatment.

Port Alfred, a picturesque coastal town nestled between Port Elizabeth and East London, is well known for its beaches, attracting surfers and tourists alike.

East Beach, in particular, is a favorite spot due to its vast coastline and excellent waves, though its rip currents can be treacherous, especially for inexperienced swimmers.

Local authorities continuously emphasize water safety, as rip currents are a major hazard.

The NSRI has reiterated the importance of calling for professional rescue assistance in water-related emergencies rather than attempting risky interventions without proper training.
