South African musician Winnie Khumalo, 51, has died following a short illness. Khumalo leaves a rich music and television legacy and is survived by her two children, Rethabile and Thando.

News24 spoke to Khumalo’s sister, Tshepi Rakeepile.
“We can confirm that Winnie has passed. She suffered a short illness. Just when we thought she was getting better, she woke up today feeling unwell. Her daughter Rethabile took her to the hospital. Upon arrival and was declared dead.”
Rakeepile said funeral details will be communicated in due time.
Born on 20 July 1973 in Mofolo North, Soweto, Khumalo began her music journey at 15. She quickly rose to fame with hit albums like Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina, produced by Sello Chicco Twala. Over the years, she became known for her powerful voice and versatile performances, collaborating with several well-known artists.
In addition to her music career, Khumalo appeared in popular South African TV series such as SABC2’s Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as in stage productions and films. Despite her busy career, she took time to focus on raising her two children, Thando and Rethabile.
