Black Afrikaans singer Dodo Nyoka claps back at ‘traitor’ label.

Dodo Nyoka has defended his right to sing Afrikaans pop music, despite social media backlash from black South Africans.

Dodo Nyoka has clapped back at criticism over his decision to sing Afrikaans music.

The black pop star is known for his catchy tunes, Meisie, Ek Verstaan, and Country Girl van Bloem, amongst many others.

On TikTok, a clip of Dodo Nyoka performing in front of a crowd of Afrikaans fans went viral. The clip attracted a barrage of criticism from black social media users, stirring racing tensions.

“Is this what white people from South Africa listen to?” asked one TikTok user. Dodo responded with a clip of him dancing to his smash hit Meisie among fellow black people. He clapped back: “Nope, it’s what the Rainbow Nation listens to.”

In another clip, Dodo Nyoka directly responded to another critic who labelled him a “traitor.”

He said: “So this man calls me a traitor because I make Afrikaans music? What he is saying is that because of the colour of my skin, I’m only allowed to sing African music.

Defending his freedom of choice, he added, “The piano keys are black and white, and together, they make music that brings colours to our hearts and minds.”

WHO IS DODO NYOKA?.

Although he grew up in the Eastern Cape, Dodo was born in the DRC and, along with his family, escaped the war-ravaged country.
His mother tongue languages are French and Xhosa. However, he also speaks English and Afrikaans fluently.
He was fostered by an Afrikaans family.
He began singing as a means to tackle his speech stutter head-on.
Dodo Nyoka was a runner-up in the second season of the Afrikaans singing competition Die Kontrak.
