PHOTOS | Doja Cat honours South African roots at Global Citizen Fest in Swarovski crystal dress

Doja Cat was the talk of the town this past weekend after she excited her South African fans by wearing a striking dress featuring the colours of the South African flag for her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in America.

The mesmerising design, known as the “Azucar fireworks” dress, was designed by Ukrainian brand Frolov and was first worn by the rapper in a golden version during her performance at the 2020 YouTube Streamy Awards.

This updated version, which proudly displayed her Mzansi roots, felt like a nod to her heritage, given that her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is South African. Although she has never met him, she has often publicly claimed that part of her heritage.

Frolov’s brand, which launched in 2015, was the first from Ukraine to become what Swarovski calls an “Ingredient Branding partner.”

His innovative designs often explore deep messages of freedom and provocation, aligning perfectly with Doja Cat’s impactful statement during her performance.

Speaking to the audience, Doja Cat called for unity and support for those affected by conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Congo.

She said: “In times like this, it is important to remember that together, we have the power to bring change, love, light and hope to those who need it most.”

“I joined forces with Global Citizen to help people in areas of conflict and crisis, and I know so many of you join me in taking action to earn your tickets to be here tonight, but we can’t stop now. Please keep using your voice to help those fleeing violence get the food, shelter and education they need and very, very much deserve.”

The spirit of Doja’s speech echoes the core values of the Frolov brand, which strives to communicate meaningful messages through fashion.

Known for its intricate corsetry and embellishments, Frolov has previously been worn by icons like Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Megan Thee Stallion.
