The South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) has produced some of the most iconic footballing legends in the country.

These players have made their mark on the field with incredible skills, passion, and dedication. Many of these legends have passed on their love for the game to their children, with several of their sons following in their footsteps and embarking on their own football careers.

The next generation of players is showing promise, and in some cases, these sons are already creating their own legacies.

Kaizer Motaung and Kaizer Motaung Junior

Kaizer Motaung made his bones at Orlando Pirates, where he earned the nickname, “Chincha Guluva” as a prolific striker.

A stint in the USA followed before he returned home to form Kaizer Chiefs.

His son, Kaizer Junior began his career in Germany with 1860 Munich, where he played before his homecoming where he represented Amakhosi from 2003 to 2014.

Gordon and Grant Igesund

Gordon Igesund made history in the late 90s when his unfancied Manning Rangers became inaugural PSL title holders.

He went on to emulate the feat with Santos, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, winning the league with all three before taking up the Ajax Cape Town job, where his son kickstarted his career as a striker.

Gordon himself played upfront during his playing days, representing the likes of Highlands Park, Witbank Aces and AmaZulu.

Sidwell and Lebohang Maboe

Unlike many of the members of the older generation featured in this list, Sidwell Maboe got to wear the PSL badge on his shirt, as his playing career ended six years after the country’s professional league was given a shake-up.

The 47-year-old turned out for the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic, Orlando Pirates and Supersport United, where he gained a reputation as a prolific goal poacher.

Nowadays, his son Lebohang is the one making the waves in the top flight, having already scored eight league goals in his first season with Mamelodi Sundowns.

His exploits in the league have not gone unnoticed by Bafana coach, Stuart Baxter and, more importantly, his extremely proud father.

“He has kept the family name and is doing very well, My heart is filled with joy whenever I see him play,” Sidwell told the Sunday World.

Jomo, Matsilele and Bamuza Sono

Soccer runs in this family, headed by the legendary Jomo Sono, who is is the most recognisable.

Having made his bones at Orlando Pirates, where his own father, Scara attained legendary status, “The Black Prince” enjoyed success overseas before returning to form his own club, Jomo Cosmos, where his two sons Matsilele and Bamuza Sono kickstarted their careers.

Chances are you’ll be familiar with Bradley Grobler, who has turned out for Chippa and Supersport United and is a regular at Bafana Bafana. His father? Maybe you will know him from his short stint as Highlands Park caretaker coach, when he was tasked with saving The Lions of the North from relegation towards the end of their debut PSL season.

The Next Generation of PSL Legends.

These 15 PSL legends and their footballer sons are continuing a proud tradition of talent and passion for the game.

As the sons of these legendary players step onto the field, they carry with them the hopes and expectations of fans who grew up watching their fathers.
