Royal AM have NOT played a competitive match since December 2024, and their sale to new owners was recently unsuccessful.

The PSL Executive Committee (PSL ExCo) has reportedly recommended that the membership of Royal AM be terminated.

This is according to a report by SABC Sport, meaning Royal AM will be expelled from the league pending the approval from the rest of the clubs.

Having not been able to honour any of their fixtures since December 2024, Royal AM are far behind from catching up.

To add salt to the wound, SARS’ attempts to sell the club to the highest bidder failed just last week.

And the PSL leadership was always expected to make a call on the future of the Royal AM in the league.

Royal AM’s troubles came after SARS went after their owner Shauwn Mkhize over tax evasion.

The players then downed tools over unpaid salaries. This was followed by a takeover by an appointed SARS curator.

Furthermore, Royal AM continue to lose players to their PSL rivals as they are neither training nor getting paid.

Now, should the rest the PSL clubs agree to the expulsion of Royal AM, the current campaign will finish with only 15 teams.

This means no club will automatically be relegated, meaning a team that finishes 15th will still fight it out in the playoffs.

ROYAL AM FACE EXPULSION AFTER PSL EXCO MEETING

“SABC Sport can confirm that the Premier Soccer League executive committee decided the membership of Royal AM should be terminated,” reads part of the report.

“It’s believed the committee met today and will now set up another gathering with the rest of the clubs to approve this conclusion.”

How Royal AM’s expulsion affects both Sundowns and Pirates…

Royal AM’s imminent expulsion will have detrimental effects on the teams that have already played against them.

The last time Thwihli Thwahla were in action was in December 2024 when they lost to TS Galaxy.

Now, as previously stated, Royal AM’s expulsion means NO club will AUTOMATICALLY be relegated, but a team that finishes 15th will still fight it out in the playoffs.

Secondly, the current campaign will finish with all the remaining 15 teams playing 28 games instead of the usual 30.

Lastly, all the points from the 11 games that Royal AM played will be EXPUNGED, meaning the points gained by teams that played Thwihli Thwahla WON’T exist.

ROYAL AM’S IMPACT ON SUNDOWNS AND ORLANDO PIRATES

Now, Mamelodi Sundowns took three points off Royal AM in October 2024 after beating them 2-1.

What it means, AS IT STANDS, is that those points will be expunged, leaving Sundowns on 55 points with 22 games instead of 58.

They would then be 12 points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates who are yet to play Royal AM.

Pirates will have three games in hand instead of four over Sundowns, and the 12-point gap could be reduced to just THREE provided Jose Riveiro’s men win those games.

Meanwhile, there will be no huge impact to teams in the bottom three when Royal AM are officially expelled.

Those teams are SuperSport United (15th), Cape Town City (14th) and Richards Bay FC (13th).

And that’s because each of those teams collected just a point against Royal AM – meaning the bottom of the log remains unchanged.
