A Durban Metro cop has killed his wife and shot their son before turning the gun on himself.

A Durban Metro police officer shot his wife and son before turning the gun on himself on Monday morning.

His son is the only survivor and is currently in hospital.

Durban Metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu said the incident happened around the Amanzimtoti/Illovo area, south of Durban.

“We can confirm the incident, and that both parents are dead but the son survived the shooting. The motive for the shooting is not known but the South African Police Service is handling the investigation. The son is being treated in hospital,” said Zungu.

The ages of the deceased and the survivor could not be immediately ascertained.

Another Metro police officer Sizwe Ngema was expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court for bail application on Monday following his arrest for the murder of his girlfriend Yolanda Khuzwayo.

Ngema is alleged to have stabbed Khuzwayo to death and allegedly took videos and pictures of the woman when she drew her last breath and shared the material on social media. The couple is said to have been drinking alcohol when the woman was attacked.

Khuzwayo was Ngema’s colleague and they had met at the training academy in 2023.
