Kelly Khumalo wanted to ‘get rid’ of Senzo

Threatening messages suggesting that singer Kelly Khumalo wanted to “get rid of” football star Senzo Meyiwa a year before his death were revealed in court this week.

Lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda told the Pretoria High Court that Khumalo sent concerning WhatsApp messages to her sister Zandi in October 2013.

“I am emotionally drained… Senzo brought a dark cloud. I hate myself for not succeeding in getting rid of him,” Khumalo wrote, according to messages read in court.

“I regret everything; I wish I never met Senzo… I wish I was not pregnant.”

Defence lawyer Sipho Ramosepele suggested that these messages might indicate murderous intent.

The court also heard messages about problems with Meyiwa’s family, in which Khumalo wrote: “I can’t wait for the day he is no longer in my heart.”

Meanwhile, murder suspect Mthobisi Mncube will be moved from solitary confinement after the North Gauteng High Court heard that he had a mental breakdown on 7 October.

Mncube spent four years locked up for 22 hours a day without access to books or entertainment.

Judge Jan Swanepoel ordered Mncube’s move to a different maximum-security prison but denied the same request from co-accused Fisokuhle Ntuli.

All five men accused of killing the Bafana Bafana captain in 2014 have pleaded not guilty.

Meyiwa and Khumalo, who recently turned 40, had a daughter together before his death on 26 October 2014.
