Kaizer Chiefs Legend Backs Relebohile Mofokeng’s Move to Europe as Interest Grows

Lucas Radebe Backs Orlando Pirates Star Relebohile Mofokeng’s Move to Europe as Interest Grows

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe has expressed strong confidence that Orlando Pirates player Relebohile Mofokeng is ready for a move to European football.

Interest in the young winger is reportedly growing, with top clubs from Europe and Major League Soccer reportedly monitoring his progress.

Radebe on Why Mofokeng Is Ready to Make the Leap
Speaking to iDiski Times, Radebe said he believes a player does not need multiple seasons in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to prove their readiness for Europe.

“I think he’s ready [to go to Europe]. For me, you don’t need five, 10 seasons in the PSL to be able to go. You know you need two great seasons like Rele is doing because they can improve,” Radebe said.

He added that young players often develop better when they move abroad early in their careers.

“They can even do better. You know he can develop easier at this stage where he can go and as early as possible. That’s what we need.”

Radebe also reflected on other South African stars who might have benefited from earlier moves overseas.

“I believe people like Siphiwe Tshabalala, people like Yeye Letsholonyane, our goalkeeper Itu [Khune] — they could have gone a long time ago but staying at a club for a longer period doesn’t help. For me, I believe they must go as young as they can.”

Father’s Heartfelt Plea for European Move
Meanwhile, just a week ago, Mofokeng’s father, Sechaba, made an emotional appeal for his son to leave the local league and pursue his dream of playing in Europe

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Sechaba said:

“My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I’m praying every day. I don’t want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers.”

He also expressed strong belief in his son’s ability to compete at the highest level across various leagues:

“Anywhere. Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I’ll be happy.”
