10 People died in a collision between a truck and a bus on the N6 in the Free State

A tragic collision between a truck and a passenger bus on the N6 road connecting Reddersburg and Smithfield in the Free State has resulted in the devastating loss of ten lives and multiple injuries.

The horrific accident occurred in the early hours of today, Wednesday, 05 March 2025.

Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, working tirelessly throughout the early morning hours to rescue passengers trapped inside the severely damaged vehicles.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, Mr Jabu Mbalula, promptly visited the crash scene near Reddersburg this morning, expressing deep concern and solidarity with those affected by this tragic event.

Upon arrival, MEC Mbalula was briefed by emergency personnel and authorities on the severity and scale of the accident, emphasizing the urgent need for medical attention and support for the injured passengers.

In total, more than 27 passengers sustained injuries, ranging from moderate to severe, requiring immediate transportation to nearby hospitals.

Of these injured passengers, 22 were swiftly taken to Stoffel Coetzee Hospital in Smithfield, where medical teams are currently providing intensive care and monitoring their conditions closely.

An additional five critically injured passengers were transported to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, known for its advanced medical facilities, to ensure they receive the specialized care and attention necessary for their recovery.

Following his visit to the crash scene, MEC Mbalula traveled directly to Stoffel Coetzee Hospital to meet personally with hospital administrators, medical staff, and the injured survivors.

He expressed his gratitude to the healthcare professionals for their dedication and prompt response in providing medical assistance during this difficult and distressing time.

After assessing the situation at Stoffel Coetzee Hospital, MEC Mbalula continued to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, where he personally visited patients and spoke with their families to extend comfort and solidarity.

During these visits, MEC Mbalula emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to providing continuous support, assistance, and resources to all those affected by the devastating collision.

In a statement made during his hospital visits, MEC Mbalula shared heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in the crash.

“Our hearts and prayers are with all the families, loved ones, and friends of the deceased and injured,” MEC Mbalula stated emotionally.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and I extend my sincere condolences and support to the grieving families during this incredibly difficult and painful time.”
