1. Akumsi Jasilay (1989 – 2018)
Akumsi Jasilay, a beloved South African actor, television presenter, and producer, became a household name as the host of SABC1’s “Your TV” in 2009. His magnetic personality earned him the title of the most popular kids show presenter that year.
Akumsi also won a SAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor in 2014 for his role in the drama series “Tempest Pushers.” Tragically, in 2018, while en route to his grandmother’s funeral, a devastating car accident claimed his life and the lives of four others. He was only 29.
2. Tumi Masilela (1988 – 2017)
Tumi Masilela was an accomplished actor, musician, and former footballer. Best known for his role as Israel on “Rhythm City,” Tumi initially pursued a soccer career, playing for SuperSport United.
However, a car accident forced him to leave sports and focus on music and acting. In August 2017, Tumi was fatally shot during a hijacking attempt. His passing at the age of 29 shocked South Africa, and the suspects were later arrested and charged with his murder.
3. Lebo Matlaba (1977 – 2006)
Lebo Matlaba, an iconic kwaito singer, actress, and dancer, was one of the leading female figures in a male-dominated genre. She was part of the legendary group Boom Shaka and often drew comparisons to her mentor, Brenda Fassie.
Lebo’s life was cut short at age 29 in a car accident in 2006. Her legacy continues, as seen in the 2019 biopic “Tattooed Dream: The Lebo Matlaba Story,” which aired on BET Africa.
4. Simba Mhere (1988 – 2015)
Zimbabwean-born Simba Mhere was a well-known presenter on the popular lifestyle show “Top Billing.” Having moved to Johannesburg as a child, Simba quickly made a name for himself in the entertainment world. In 2015, at just 26, Simba was killed in a car crash. His tragic death left the nation grieving for a promising young star. The driver responsible was later convicted of culpable homicide.
5. Maruti Mhlali (1981 – 2002)
Actress Maruti Mhlali was adored for her role on the TV show “Backstage.” At just 21 years old, Maruti’s life ended in a car accident while traveling with her boyfriend and sister. Though her boyfriend survived, he faced charges of culpable homicide but was eventually acquitted.
6. Senzo Meyiwa (1987 – 2014)
Senzo Meyiwa, the talented goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates and the South African national team, was fatally shot in what initially appeared to be a botched robbery. However, later reports suggested that the incident may have been an intentional act during a domestic dispute. Though Senzo had just turned 30 at the time of his death, he is remembered as one of the nation’s greatest footballers.
7. Sizwe Quintana (1994 – 2019)
Sizwe Quintana, best known for his lead role in the film “Matrix,” co-produced by DJ Black Coffee, had a bright future ahead of him. Tragically, Sizwe was stabbed to death during a robbery in 2019. He was only 25.
8. Reeva Steenkamp (1983 – 2013)
Reeva Steenkamp was a celebrated model and television personality. She was tragically shot dead by her boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Oscar claimed he mistook her for an intruder. Reeva’s death at 29 shocked the world, and Pistorius was later convicted of her murder.
9. TK Minga (1979 – 2006)
TK Minga, a South African R&B singer, passed away at the age of 27 under mysterious circumstances. Her death was ruled as either a drug overdose or drug-induced suicide. TK was renowned for her exceptional vocal talent, often compared to global stars like Mariah Carey.
10. Precious Melanie (1975 – 2002)
Precious Melanie, an actress known for her roles in “Backstage” and “Generations,” tragically passed away from a short illness at the age of 27. While the cause of her death remains largely undisclosed, her devout nature and remarkable talent left a lasting impression on South African audiences.
