Starting at number 10, we have St. Andrew’s School for Girls in Sandton, with fees of 287,000 rand. St. Andrew’s School for Girls is a Christian, girls-only day and boarding school in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Founded in 1902, the school consists of three schools: preschool, junior school, and senior school. It has around 1,100 students and is known for its prestigious alumni, including legendary actress Terry Pheto.
At number nine, we have St. Albans College, also with fees of 287,000 rand. St. Albans College is a private boarding, English-medium day high school for boys situated in the suburb of Lynnwood Lane in Pretoria, Gauteng province of South Africa.
It was founded in 1963 with just 37 boys and three teachers. Today, it has over 580 students and 43 teachers. The school attracts a significant number of international students, and more than six percent of the educators are expatriates from different countries.
Number eight on the list is Bishops College, with fees of 293,000 rand. Bishops College, also known as the Diocesan College, is a private English-medium boarding and day high school for boys in Cape Town, South Africa.
The school was established on October 18, 1849, by the Bishop of Cape Town. It began as a missionary school for boys where pupils were taught Christian doctrine, Latin, and Greek. The high school currently has over 780 students.
Number seven is St. Mary’s School, with fees of 293,000 rand. St. Mary’s School is a private English-medium Anglican boarding school for girls located in Johannesburg, Gauteng province.
Established in 1888, it is the oldest school in Johannesburg and accepts female students from grade 0 to grade 12. With over 1,057 students, it is one of the top and most academic schools in Gauteng. Notable alumni from the school include former ANC leader Helen Zille and English author Peroline Slaughter.
At number six, we have Michaelhouse, with fees of 303,000 rand. Michaelhouse is a private boarding, English-medium high school for boys in Balgowan, a small town between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
Michaelhouse was named after Kent, a village in Kent, England, and was founded in 1921 by S.E.K. Muir. The aim of setting up the college was to provide quality education for Methodist ministers and their sons and families in the church. The high school currently has 650 students and, as of 2020, students in the school have achieved a 100 percent pass rate.
Number five on the list is St. John’s College, with fees of 304,000 rand. St. John’s College is an Anglican day and boarding boys’ high school situated in the city of Johannesburg. It was founded in 1898 by Reverend John Daniel, the same person who founded St. Mary’s School, which was number seven on this list.
St. John’s College has a religious affiliation to the Anglican Church and rich Anglican culture and practices. The school, ranked number 11 in Africa, has 1,350 students.
At number four, we have Roedean School for Girls, with fees of 318,000 rand. Roedean School for Girls is a private English-medium boarding school for girls situated in the suburb of Houghton in the city of Johannesburg.
Roedean School for Girls was founded in 1903 by University of Cambridge graduates Theresa Lawrence and their partner Catherine Margaret. The aim of establishing the school was to provide young girls with a quality education capable of competing with that which boys received. The school, which started with 22 pupils, currently has 815 students.
Number three on the list is St. Andrew’s College, with fees of 320,000 rand. St. Andrew’s College is an Anglican high school for boys located in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
It was founded in 1885 by the Reverend John Armstrong and the first Bishop of Grahamstown. It is a semi-boarding school with a number of day boys. St. Andrew’s College started with around 480 pupils from around the globe.
The list of notable alumni from the school is endless but includes business executives such as Sam Michaels, Edward Miles, and Jacob Marais, the former CEO of Standard Bank, and Anthony Bow, founder of Great Capital Partners, among others.
In number two, we have Michaelhouse, with fees of 328,000 rand. Michaelhouse is located in the Balgowan Valley in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It has a rich history of providing education for the children of the rich and powerful.
The school offers a traditional education focused on classics, languages, music, art, and sport. Despite its extremely high tuition fee, Michaelhouse has a total of 615 students, each with access to a personal tutor.
Finally, at number one, we have Hilton College, with fees of 343,000 rand. Hilton College is currently the most expensive private school in South Africa. Founded in 1872, it is a private boarding school for boys located in the town of Hilton in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Hilton College is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the school. With a total of 500 students, each pupil has access to a personal tutor. Hilton College has produced a number of notable alumni, including eight Springbok rugby players, two Constitutional Court judges, and the former vice president of Microsoft.
