In this video, we explore and tell the stories behind the lives of some of the most famous actors we lost too soon. You will be surprised that most of their deaths did not receive significant attention.
1. Christopher Kua
Christopher Kua was best known for his role as the gunman in Yoo and was known as Baza in the TV series Zone 14. He had a successful acting career and lived in Johannesburg, blessed with 14 children.
After his death, 10 more children were introduced to the family, making a total of 24. Christopher committed suicide in 2017, leaving behind a suicide note explaining the reason, which was the discovery of his wife, Cynthia Kumaro, being unfaithful.
2. David Duas
David Duas was a brilliant South African actor from Cape Town. He regularly played Mike in the TV series Backstage, a charming bad guy with an absolute smile. David studied for many Hollywood films and maintained his acting career until his death in July 2021 from a heart attack.
He was 51 years old and had no heart complications throughout his life, appearing to be in good health until the heart attack. Fortunately, he had someone with him when he suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the Medic Clinic Hospital in Cape Town, but died on the way there.
3. Leana Le
Leana Le is best known for her role as Kina in Deep City. She was born and raised in M Village, Limpopo, studied theatre at the Paul R Institute and later moved to Johannesburg to find work. Deep City was Leana’s first opportunity in acting, and unexpectedly became her last. She died in November 2023 after a short illness, born in 1989, aged 34 when she died.
4. MC Mundra
MC Mundra was a talented actor from Gauteng who played Op in Kula and also appeared in many TV series such as Scandal, Generations, Home Affairs and five other TV series. On 29 May 2021, McDonald had difficulty breathing and was admitted to hospital the following day, but died two days later.
5. O
O was an accomplished actor with great potential, but sadly we lost him at such a young age. He was best known for his roles in Zone 14, Streets of M, and Muvango. O was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in 2019, underwent chemotherapy and lived for a year and a half before passing away in 2021, aged 37.
6. M
M was a talented South African actor from Soweto, appearing in many films and television shows such as Generations, Isidingo, Rhythm City, and more. He fell ill during the Covid-19 pandemic and his death was attributed to Covid-19.
7. One
One is best known for his role as Teaser in the television series Yoo. He was born in Inanda and later moved to Johannesburg, living off donations before passing away from an unspecified illness in October 2015 at Jabulani Hospital. He had been in hospital for two weeks before his death, aged 39.
8. Lindy
Lindy was born in Durban in 1977, and began acting at a young age as her father was a famous writer. Lindy has appeared in many South African films and popular television shows such as Scandal, Soul City, Isidingo, and Ifal. She died on 11 November 2021, aged 44, reportedly due to Covid-19.
9. Mr
Mr was a legendary actor and director, appearing in many television series such as Generations, Scandal, and many others. His most important role was as an actor.
He died in June 2016 after a long battle with diabetes, at home when his health condition became serious and was transferred to Le Hospital by his son, but he did not regain consciousness.
10. Sam Philips
Sam Philips was a talented South African actor from Cape Town, who began his acting career in 1998. He appeared in over 22 South African television productions and was also a songwriter. Sam died in November 2021 after being in and out of hospital for two years. He was 72.
11. Tanda
Tanda made her television debut in 2013 when she appeared in AA Stories, and also had supporting roles in Generations, Isidingo, and Rhythm City. She died in 2021, aged 34, after being shot on 3 September in Bumaran, and was rushed to Steve Biko Hospital but died the following day.
12. Mary M
Mary M was a talented actress from Johannesburg, Pretoria, who began acting in 1988 as F in the SABC2 soap K. She was seriously injured in a fall in July 2017 and lost consciousness.
She was transferred to Johannesburg Hospital and after four days was transferred to Pretoria Hospital in a critical condition. About two weeks later, on 7 August 2017, Mary died, aged 51, never to regain consciousness.
13. Ciso
Ciso was a talented young actor who quickly rose to the top of his career with roles in Backstage, Home Affairs, and Gazab. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and began chemotherapy in 2019.
Ciso’s health continued to decline, but not as rapidly as before he began chemotherapy. However, that only lasted less than two years and he lost his battle with cancer in November 2021 at the age of 37.
14. Patrick Inu
Patrick Inu began his acting career in the 1980s, first appearing in Shulu and then starring in the 1990 film OD Ball Hall, where his career began to flourish. Patrick had a career spanning over four decades, was a truly talented artist, and lived a happy life. He passed away on 10 May 2023 due to age-related causes.
15. David Pet
David Pet was a talented actor from Johannesburg, born in 1933, who had a successful career with roles in many films. In 1993, David was cast in the first season of Generations on SABC1 and stayed with the show
