Mduduzi Mabaso (born 1 April 1976) is a South African actor. He is best known for his roles in the films and television series Blood Diamond, Machine Gun Preacher, Hotel Rwanda and Rhythm City.

Early Life and Education

Mduduzi Mabaso was born and raised in Alexandra, a township in northern Johannesburg, South Africa.

He spent three years of his childhood in Transkei, a former homeland in the eastern Cape Province. The actor discovered his passion for acting while attending drama school.

Acting Career

The villainous actor began his acting career in 1992 when he appeared in a theatre production called Divide and Rule.

He then acted in several stage plays, such as Cry The Beloved Country, Madiba’s Magic, Behind the Curtains, Shaka Zulu and Tasha On The Rocks.

In 2004, he made his film debut with the American film Hotel Rwanda, directed by Terry George. The film was based on the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

The thespian played the role of a hotel employee who helps the protagonist, Paul Rusesabagina, save hundreds of refugees.

The actor then starred in several other films, such as Catch a Fire (2006), Heartlines (2006), Blood Diamond (2006) and Machine Gun Preacher (2011).

He also appeared in a short film called Sekalli le Meokgo (2006), directed by Tebho Mahlatsi. The film won the Best Short Film award at the 2007 Durban International Film Festival.

Mabaso is famous for his television roles, especially as Suffocate Ndlovu, a gangster and nightclub owner, on the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City.

He played the role from the show’s debut in July 2007 until its last episode in July 2021. He also appeared in other television shows, such as Zone 14, Yizo Yizo 2, A Place Called Home, Soul City, Justice For All 4 and Chicken Biznis.

Mabaso has won several awards for his acting, including two Golden Horn Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Soap and Best Actor in a Feature Film.

He also modelled on the Soweto Fashion Week runway for fashion designer Floyd Avenue in 2015.

Personal life

Mduduzi Mabaso was previously married to Veronica Maseko, with whom he had two children: Ntokozo and Mpumi.

He is currently married to fellow actress Fatima Metsileng, whom he met on the set of Zone 14 in 2007. They have two more children: Njabulo and Zolile.
