Kickoff reported over the weekend that Saleng’s absence at the club could be due to an ‘option’ in the player’s contract at the club.

Mpho Nkontlha of Kkontlha Attorney told Kickoff exclusively that “an option is a common law clause that is inserted in a contract by a football club in order to safeguard its interests.

“Both the FIFA Statutes and regulations of the status and transfer of players are silent on application and interpretation of an option to renew.”

Unresolved wage dispute may keep Saleng off the pitch with Pirates in 2025
It comes down to a likely wage dispute, Nkontlha suggested, as Saleng’s salary would have been negotiated at the beginning of his contract, but a couple of years later, the player could be worth more.

As speculation continues to swirl around Monnapule Saleng’s future with Orlando Pirates, the talented winger’s absence from the squad has sparked concerns among fans and analysts alike.

At the heart of this ongoing situation is uncertainty over Saleng’s contract, which is reportedly tied to an ‘option’ that has led to negotiations stalling, ultimately contributing to his lack of appearances this year.

According to Kickoff, the player’s absence stems from a clause inserted into his contract, which makes it challenging for both sides to negotiate a new salary reflective of his increased worth since he originally signed.

Mpho Nkontlha, of Kkontlha Attorney, weighed in on the matter, explaining that “an option is a common law clause that is inserted in a contract by a football club in order to safeguard its interests.

” This option, however, has left Saleng in a precarious position as his original salary may not be commensurate with his performance and market value today.

Saleng, 27, has not taken to the pitch since December 2024, when he last played against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League, marking nearly four months without play at a time when his skills could be vital for the team’s success.

Compounding the issue is the looming end of coach Jose Riveiro’s contract, which is set to expire on June 30, 2025.

There are speculations that Saleng’s future at Pirates may be closely tied to Riveiro’s fate.

According to sources at Soccer Laduma, renewing Riveiro’s contract seems almost inevitable given his accomplishments with the club, and his vision for the team’s future includes reintegrating Saleng into the lineup.

An unnamed source relayed that “he was one of the first names on the coach’s lineups.

It is without a doubt that he is one of the players whose talent the coach admires.

Riveiro himself addressed the concern regarding Saleng during a press conference, albeit cryptically.

“I don’t think about players when we win or when we don’t win.

I think no one would like to be in this situation when we started the season, but it is what it is,” he stated, leaving some ambiguity about what’s next for the player.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Orlando Pirates are not sitting idle.

The club has been linked to acquiring Kabelo Kgositsile from Baroka FC, who is considered a direct replacement for Saleng.

An agreement has been reached for the player to join Pirates at the conclusion of the current season, raising further questions about Saleng’s role, should he remain with the team.

Nevertheless, insiders believe that Saleng’s potential departure is not yet a foregone conclusion.

It appears there remains a glimmer of hope for the talented winger to re-establish his place within the squad.

As one source pointed out, if all differences between Saleng and the club can be resolved, his return to play “is a chance” that could indeed happen before the end of the current season.

As of now, Orlando Pirates have not commented publicly on Saleng’s situation, maintaining that his absence is temporary, and discussions between the club and his representatives are ongoing.

They previously referred to matters concerning Saleng as an employer-employee situation that requires resolution.

Fans remain hopeful that Saleng may yet return to don the iconic black and white jersey, despite the uncertainties that remain.

In summary, while the situation regarding Monnapule Saleng at Orlando Pirates remains complex and unresolved, signs of potential resolution could hint at a future where he continues to contribute to the team’s successes.

His talent has not gone unnoticed by the coaching staff, and should negotiations reach a positive conclusion, fans may see him back on the field sooner rather than later.

Negotiating a better salary for Saleng could prove difficult according to the terms of his original contract, and if this is the case, it could explain why the 27-year-old has not featured for Pirates this year.

Last week, it emerged that Saleng’s future at Pirates could be linked with coach Jose Riveiro.

Riveiro’s three-year contract ends on June 30, and it would be almost a foregone conclusion that the Spaniard renews his deal given his results with the club.

According to a Soccer Laduma source, getting Saleng back into the Pirates team could be one of the top priorities for Riveiro: “He [Saleng] was one of the first names on the coach’s lineups. It is without a doubt that he is one of the players whose talent the coach admires. The coach would love to have him in his team again, even if it’s beyond this season.”

Two weeks ago, Riveiro spoke about the Saleng issue for the first time. Even though he did not reveal much, reading between the lines gave some good insight into the situation.

“I don’t think about players when we win or when we don’t win. I think no one would like to be in this situation when we started the season, but it is what it is,” said Riveiro.
