Gospel singer Winnie Mashaba stirred strong reactions when she arrived at the funeral of the late Solly Moholo in a helicopter, a grand gesture to pay her last respects.
Solly, a beloved veteran in the gospel music industry, tragically passed away on October 2 after a difficult battle with illness.
While on tour in Botswana, he fell critically ill and required R700,000 for life-saving brain surgery.
Despite his efforts to raise the funds, he was unable to secure the necessary financial support, as reported by TimesLive. His death marked the end of an era for his many fans and the gospel music community.
Winnie’s arrival at the funeral, held at Akasia Hall, was meant to be a tribute to her dear friend and colleague.
However, her dramatic entrance did not sit well with everyone in attendance.
According to Sunday World, members of the Association for the Entertainers of South Africa (Aesa) were angered by what they perceived as an attention-seeking display during what should have been a solemn affair.
Tensions escalated to the point where Aesa members attempted to block Winnie from entering the funeral, claiming the family had specifically requested her exclusion, though this was not confirmed.
This wasn’t the first time Winnie faced backlash. Just a week earlier, she had visited Moholo’s family in a private aircraft, which some found inappropriate.
A source told TimesLive that the aircraft had originally been arranged for a visit to Solly while he was hospitalised. But instead, it was now seen as a move for “showboating and exposure,” further inflaming emotions surrounding her actions.
