As Amahle Thabethe from Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, turns 14 this year, her family continues to endure the heartache of her six-year disappearance.
Though time has passed, the pain of her absence remains fresh, and both her loved ones and local authorities remain unwavering in their commitment to finding her, holding on to hope that one day she will return home.
Amahle was reported missing in 2018, and her mother, Nokulunga Nkosi, reflects on the bittersweet nature of her daughter’s upcoming birthday.
“This is a sensitive matter. Whenever we talk about it, it becomes very emotional,” Nkosi shared, highlighting the toll the situation has taken on the family.
In moments where hope seems within reach, they choose to communicate only with those directly involved in the search, aiming to shield themselves from disappointment.
Leading efforts to locate Amahle is the One Strong Voice Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to social justice advocacy.
Brian Sithole, the foundation’s Chief Operating Officer and Director, emphasized the group’s ongoing commitment to the search.
In collaboration with various local organizations, they have combed areas where sightings were reported and organized marches to raise awareness about her disappearance.
Despite receiving numerous tips over the years, no significant breakthroughs have been made.
Sithole described the challenges the family and volunteers have faced, particularly regarding the investigation.
“We asked the South African Police Services (SAPS) to issue a R50,000 cash reward for information leading to her recovery, but this was only approved two years after Amahle vanished,” he revealed.
Complicating matters further, the case has been handled by multiple investigators since the initial officer retired, making continuity difficult.
Community members have also turned to prayer, holding sessions aimed at offering hope and strength to those grappling with Amahle’s absence.
Sithole expressed frustration with the spread of misinformation on social media.
“It’s disturbing when people joke or spread fake news about missing children while families like Amahle’s are dealing with the real pain of not knowing,” he said, urging the public to approach such situations with sensitivity and respect.
Despite the setbacks, the One Strong Voice Foundation remains steadfast in keeping Amahle’s case in the spotlight.
Sithole called for continued support from the community and law enforcement, asserting, “The search for Amahle Thabethe will not stop until she is found.”
As another year passes without answers, Amahle’s family continues to face their sorrow with love and resilience.
lThe search for her reflects not only the relentless pursuit of answers but also the broader issue of missing children in South Africa.
The unity of her family, local organizations, and the community serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity and persistence in the face of uncertainty.
In this ongoing tragedy, the call for awareness and support remains critical.
The hope that Amahle will one day return home continues to inspire those involved in her search, reinforcing the message that every effort matters when it comes to the fight against the devastation of missing children.
